Our flight was late afternoon so we spent the day looking round the shops and had a big walk in the Queenstown Gardens. We took a drive round to Kelvin Heights and had a nosey at some impressive houses there. We were sad to drop off our campervan-our home for the past week and checked in at the tiny airport. We were on the plane at 4.30pm all set for take off when an announcement came over from the captain saying that due to an unexpected wind change they had calculated that the plane was now to heavy to fly back to Auckland with its current weight. They asked for 8 volunteers to get off the plane and fly back the next day, they would sort out accomodation etc so before they had even finished the announcement gail pressed the flight attendant call button to say we would be happy to do it! The whole plane broke out into applause when we were getting off the plane ha ha it was no problem for us as didn't have work to go back to till the Monday.
Within an hour of getting off the plane we checked into our big room with great views at the Copthorne Hotel. We had a relax in the spa pool, a 3 course meal and an amazingly comfy bed for the night all paid for by Air N.Z...it pays to volunteer :) Such a perfect end to our trip and was so good to get a bit of luxury after sleeping in the van for a week. We even had a buffet continental breakie in the morning to tuck into which was again for free!
